Hang On Sloopy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Hang On Sloopy" is a 1964 song owned by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell, originally titled "My Girl Sloopy". A tale told around Columbus, Ohio, is that Sloopy was a waitress/singer, who used the name "Sloopy" on stage. The truth is the song was never about her. It was written by a St. Louis teen who created a fictitious "Sloopy" and then sold his rights to Farrell and Russell. It was first recorded by The Vibrations in 1964, for Atlantic Records (45-2222), becoming a top-30 hit. As recorded by the pop group The McCoys, "Hang On Sloopy" went to #1 in America in October 1965

The original members, all from Union City, were guitarist Richard Zehringer (later known as Rick Derringer), his brother Randy on drums, and bassist Dennis Kelly. This first line-up was known as "The Rick Z Combo", and later known as "Rick and the Raiders". When Kelly left for college, the Zehringers were joined by bassist Randy Jo Hobbs, saxophonist Sean Michaels, and keyboardist Ronnie Brandon.
This was the line-up that took the name of "The McCoys". Brandon left the group in 1965 and was replaced by Bobby Peterson on keyboards. One of their best-known songs is "Hang On Sloopy", which was #1 in America in the Billboard Hot 100 chart in October 1965 and is the official rocksong of the state of Ohio. It also is the unofficial fight song of The Ohio Sate University Buckeyes and can heard being played at many Ohio State athletic events by the OSU bands.
Lyrics Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on
Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

Sloopy lives in a very bad part of town
And everybody there tries to put my Sloopy down
Sloopy I don't care what your daddy do
'Cause you know Sloopy girl I'm in love with you
And so I'm singing…

CHORUS
Yeah yeah yeah yeah…

LEAD BREAK

Sloopy let your hair down girl, let it run down on me
Sloopy let your hair down girl, let it run down on me

Come on Sloopy Come on, come on - x 2
Well come on Sloopy Come on, come on - x 2

Well it feels so good Come on, come on
You know it feels so good Come on, come on

Well shake it, shake it, shake it Sloopy Come on, come on
Well shake it, shake it, shake it yeah
Yeah…

CHORUS
